Kandersteg Ice Climbing Festival 2010
New Festival Terrain
The 11th Kandersteg Ice Climbing Festival will take place from the 8th to the 10th of January, 2010 in the Bernese Oberland, for the first time at a new location at the ‘Seilpark Kandersteg’ across from the Gemmi Lodge. The rock wall will be iced especially for the competition and the workshops. Featured speakers will be the legendary Saxon climber Bernd Arnold on Saturday and Slovak alpinist Dodo Kopold on Sunday. Expect some gripping and humorous presentations!
Saturday’s competition will be the festival’s highlight, and as in years past, a world-class line-up of ice climbers. After the competition, there will be a party at the Gemmi Tavern featuring a live band. On Sunday, top climbers on the World Cup circuit will be offering clinics for beginners and advanced climbers alike, and all the necessary gear will be provided free of charge at the sponsors’ test center.
As the annual kick-off for the ice climbing season, climbers from all over Europe will be meeting for ice climbing, presentations, competitions and workshops. With about 500 expected climbers, spectators and visitors; this festival is considered one of the biggest international ice-events in the Alps.
The main sponsors of the Kandersteg Ice Climbing Festival are Arc’teryx, Bächli Bergsport, Black Diamond, Lowa and Nokia, while sponsoring partners are Kandersteg Tourismus, Destination Lötschberg, Sterling Rope and Vertical and Klettern magazines.
