I met with climbing when I was 6 years old, and at that time this sport was just another hobby for me. But later, I realised that sport climbing is not just some sport I “accidently” met with. It has become sort of way of living.

I started competing when I was 9, and since then, competitions became my »drog«. Just when I was at high school, before the final exams, I stopped climbing for like 8 months, because I was too suffocated with everything. I kind of used this time for stuff that I wasn’t been able to do in years when I was training so hard.
Soon after first competitions, I got into youth team, and at that time, I achived three youth world championship titles, and two times second places. At the age of sixteen I also started to compete in world cup, where my first competition was in Chamonix, and also my first world cup final.

Besides this, I also climbed at rock, and I did my first 8b already in 2002, and before that I did already 8a on sight. 2006, was very successful year for me. Not just on the competitions, but also because I climbed my first 8b+ route Kaj ti je deklica, and my first 8c route, named Strelovod, both in Mišja peč in Slovenia. This year I also sent Histerija 8c+. And for all my results and achivements I can thank to my coatch Aleš Jensterle who trains me from my early childhood.
Now, I can’t imagine life without cimbing, without competitions, which at the moment really mean me a lot. I want to dedicade this few years to competitions, and achive as many tops and good resaults. But when I finish,.. Well, I’ll let myself surprise.

Tomaž Humar (February 18, 1969 – c. November 10, 2009), nicknamed Gozdni Joža (akin to Hillbilly), was a Slovenian mountaineer. A father of two, Humar lived in Kamnik, Slovenia. He completed over 1500 ascents, and won a number of mountaineering and other awards, including the Piolet d’Or in 1996 for his Ama Dablam ascent.[1]

He became widely recognized in 1999 after his famous solo ascent of the south wall of Dhaulagiri[2], considered one of the deadliest routes in the Himalayas with a 40% fatality rate.[3]

During a solo attempt to climb Nanga Parbat in 2005, Humar became trapped by avalanches and melting snow at an altitude of nearly 6000 meters.[4] After six days in a snow cave he was rescued by a Pakistani army helicopter crew on August 10, 2005.[5]

On October 28, 2007, Humar reached the Eastern summit of Annapurna I (8091 m) via a route at the far eastern end of the South Face.[6][7]

On November 9, 2009, Humar, who was on a solo climb via the South Face of Langtang Lirung (last climbed in 1995[8]), had an accident during the descent.[9] His only contact with the base camp staff via a satellite phone was made on the day of the accident and he appeared to be in critical condition with leg, spine and rib injuries. He was stuck on the mountain at an elevation of approximately 6300 meters for several days before his body was found on November 14, 2009 at an elevation of 5600 meters.

Wolfgang Güllich (24 October 1960 – 31 August 1992), was born in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and is widely considered to be one of the best sport climbers in history.

He first started climbing on the Sandstone-rocks of the ‘Südpfalz’. Soon he became one of the best climbers in this region and made the first free ascent of ‘Jubiläumsriss VII-’ at the age of 16. He travelled to the Elbsandsteingebirge, and to the Shawangunks and Yosemite Valley, US, where he could climb most of the top routes of each area, including a 2nd ascend of Grand Illusion, 5.13b/c (FA by Toni Yaniro). Later he moved to the Frankenjura and created a great number of hard climbing routes such as:

Kanal im Rücken X- (1984)

Punks in the Gym X / 8b / 32 (1985)(Mt Arapiles, Australia)

Amadeus Schwarzenegger X- (1986)

Wallstreet XI- (1987)

Action Directe XI (1991) (still considered one of the hardest routes worldwide)

Thus Güllich added several grades to the grading system. In fact, with the exception of Ben Moon’s Hubble (the world’s first 8c+), Wolfgang was responsible for 4 consecutive step-ups with the world’s first 8b (Kanal Im Rücken , 1984), 8b+ (Punks In The Gym, Apr 1985), 8c (Wall street, 1987), and 9a (Action Directe, Aug 1991). Güllich also invented the modern training technique of campus boarding in order to climb Action Directe.

He was also responsible for first ascents of routes like ‘Eternal Flame (IX- A2)’ in the Karakoram and ‘Riders on the Storm (IX A3)’ in Patagonia. The boldness of these routes showed that he excelled at difficult mountain routes as well as one-pitch sports climbs.

He broke his back falling off the Master’s Edge at Millstone Quarry in Derbyshire, England but when he recovered climbed Separate Reality in Yosemite National Park, USA (1986). Climbing without a rope, he negotiated a twenty foot horizontal crack in an overhanging roof.

He was also a climbing double for Sylvester Stallone in the movie Cliffhanger.

In 1990 he became acquainted with Anette, whom he married one year later.

On August 29, 1992 Wolfgang’s car veered off the Autobahn between Munich and Nuremberg. Two days later he died in a hospital in Ingolstadt, never having regained consciousness.

Early life

She was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the surgeon W. W. Keen. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1896, she held various positions in philanthropic organizations, in Philadelphia, including the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the American Society for Labor Legislation, and the Society for Organizing Charity,[1] helping to bring about important reforms.

Alpine climbing

In her travels she covered the North American continent from Alaska to Panama, both coasts of South America and the interior of the southern portion, eastern, western, and southern Asia and northern Africa; and she made numerous visits to Europe. Her activity as an Alpinist began with eight ascents of first-class peaks in the Alps in 1909-10. Starting withthe opportunity to climb the Matterhorn, Keen traveled to Zermatt in the summer of 1909, where she climbed the Zinal Rothorn, the Monte Rosa, the Weisshorn, and the Matterhorn.[2]

In the midsummer of 1911 her inadequately outfitted expedition, hastily organized for the ascent of Mount Blackburn (16, 140 feet) (4919 m) in Alaska, was unsuccessful, as the expedition wasted 4 1/2 days trying to climb two different glaciers at the mountain base, compared with a total expected climb time of 12 days. Each effort was abandoned as avalanches had rendered the glaciers impassable.[3] Keen returned early in 1912, with only local prospectors for companions, and accomplished the record first ascent of the mountain 19 May[4] of this sub-Arctic peak. Out of 33 days which the party spent entirely on glaciers, for 20 they were without tents, sleeping in snow caves at low temperatures in extreme storms[4]; and for 10 days they had only candles for fuel.

Expeditions

This expedition was immediately followed by a journey of 300 miles (483 km) on foot and by open, camp-built boat across the Alaskan wilderness to the Yukon River; for 125 miles (201 km) the route lay over Skolai Pass, which Miss Keen was the first woman ever to cross. In 1914, with three men, she made scientific observations of the glaciers of Harriman and College fjords, Prince William Sound, Alaska, and made the first explorations of the Harvard Glacier, reaching its sources (6100 ft) (1859 m).

Miss Keen contributed numerous articles to popular and geographical magazines and lectured on her experiences. She became a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London, in 1914.

Personal

Keen married George Handy on 8 July, 1916, in McCarthy Alaska, within sight of Mount Blackburn. They settled in West Hartford, Vertmont and operated a farm. The couple remained married for 16 years, then divorced. Following the divorce Keen sold insurance products and continued to travel throughout the world. In 1962 Keen went on a world tour at age 91, including Alaska where she had not been since 1915. She died on this tour, in Hong Kong on 31 January, 1963.[1]
